Fire-Safe Window Installation in Northern California
Protect Your Home. Improve Comfort. Prepare for Every Season.
As Northern California’s summer temperatures rise and conditions become drier, many homeowners are upgrading to custom, energy-efficient replacement windows that improve comfort, lower energy costs, and support their home’s overall wildfire preparedness.
Why Your Windows Matter During Wildfire Season
Windows can be one of the most vulnerable parts of a home during a wildfire. Intense heat may cause older glass to crack or break, allowing heat and embers to enter.
Modern replacement windows with dual-pane construction and tempered glass options can help improve your home’s overall resilience while also increasing comfort, energy efficiency, and year-round performance.
WUI Compliant Windows
California State Codes and specifically Marin County and Sonoma County require new windows to be compliant for Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) or Fire Hazard Severity Zones.
1. General Safety Glazing Locations (California State Code)
- Near Doors: Any window within 24 inches of a door (horizontally) must be tempered if the bottom exposed edge is less than 60 inches above the floor.
- In Doors: Glass in any swinging, sliding, or bifold door always requires safety glazing. [
- Near Floors: Large windows require tempering if they exceed 9 sq. ft. in area, the bottom edge is less than 18 inches above the floor, and a walking surface is within 36 inches.
- Stairways & Wet Areas: Glass near stair landings, steps, ramps, or within 60 inches of a bathtub/shower pan requires tempering.
2. Wildfire Zone Mandates (Local County Amendments)
Much of the North Bay is situated in high-risk wildfire zones (WUI zones). If your home is in a designated WUI zone, building codes require all new or replacement windows to feature dual-pane or multi-pane insulated glass with at least one tempered pane or SFM-approved fire-rated glass/glass block for new windows or windows with an equivalent fire-rated glazing. Save Energy Co offers dual pane, WUI compliant windows and can answer any of your questions and help you through the permitting process if required by your City or County.
Rebates & Home Hardening Assistance Programs
Save Energy Co has looked into Federal, State, and Local financing and assistance programs for Energy and Green Lending. While federal programs may be gone currently, there are many other options available to homeowners in the North Bay. From low-interest financing options with various banks, credit unions, or other programs to new insurance and home resale requirements by the state, Save Energy is a fantastic resource to homeowners we work with on navigating the ever-changing landscape of regulations, policies, and insurance when it comes to your home.
Sonoma County
In Sonoma County, start the Home Hardening page under Energy and Sustainability on the county’s website. The County offers some rebates and programs for home hardening including window replacements from single page glass over and above any manufacturer rebates or federal programs. Explore more here.
Marin County
Marin County has several options for homeowners, but a good place to start is the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority. Homeowners can apply for assistance, especially for overgrown areas or home hardening projects. Many of their projects are specifically for low-income homeowners and don’t specifically cover WUI-compliant window replacement. However, their grants could free up funds and cover other needs for homeowners that will allow you to upgrade windows or entry doors or use our 12-month 0% financing through Regions to help complete your home hardening updates and keep your home as fire safe as possible. Ask your Save Energy estimator more about financing options. And, learn more about Marin County Wildfire prevention here.
Novato Specific: If you live in Novato, the Fire District offers free assessments, and you can apply for a home hardening grant which will cover updating to WUI compliant windows.
Napa County
Napa County offers income-qualified residents a grant reimbursement option through their Firewise’s Defensible Space Cost Share Program. Thanks to a CAL FIRE grant, Napa Firewise is offering financial assistance for residents within the High or Very High Fire Severity Zones to help Napa County residents reduce wildfire risk around their homes through our Defensible Space Cost Share Program. This program provides reimbursement for qualifying defensible space work completed following the no-cost home evaluation. This grant will only cover new defensible space work and cannot reimburse for work completed prior to the grant. Income-qualified residents may receive up to 100% reimbursement, capped at $3,500. Other eligible residents may qualify for 50% reimbursement, also up to $3,500. Learn more about Napa Home Hardening here.
